"Solar Doesn't Work Here": Handling the Climate Myth at the Door

You'll hear a version of this in every region — cloudy, cold, humid, hot, doesn't matter. Homeowners have decided their specific climate is the exception, and most of them are working off a mental model that's backwards. The fix isn't arguing harder. Most people equate solar production with heat. Hot and sunny equals good, cold and cloudy equals bad. That's intuitive and it's wrong on the part that actually matters for output.

This is exactly why a real proposal isn't built off a sunny-day guess. It's built off your region's actual annual production data — factoring in average cloud cover, day length across seasons, and panel angle — not a single best-case afternoon.

That line does two things: it agrees with the premise instead of fighting it, and it tells them the objection is already priced in, which is usually the part they assumed nobody had thought about.
Where the myth has a kernel of truth
Climate does affect the pitch — just not the way most homeowners think.
- Snow load and shading matter more than temperature. A steep roof pitch sheds snow fast; a shallow one holds it. Worth a real answer, not a dismissal.
- Humid, hazy regions do lose some production to atmospheric scattering — real, but small compared to what homeowners assume, and still factored into the regional production estimate.
- Extreme heat regions genuinely do see summer efficiency dips — which is the opposite direction of what most homeowners expect, and worth saying out loud because it makes you sound like you know what you're talking about instead of selling past the truth.
Naming the real, smaller effect instead of pretending climate doesn't matter at all is what makes the rest of the pitch credible.
Don't overcorrect into a promise you can't keep
The fix for "solar doesn't work here" is never "solar works everywhere the same." It offsets a portion of the bill based on the system size, the roof's orientation, shading, and the region's actual sun hours — not a fixed percentage that applies to every house on the street. Promising a number before you've measured their roof is the same mistake as the homeowner's, just in the other direction.
What this sounds like at the door
- Homeowner: "I don't think solar makes sense here — we're cloudy like half the year."
- You: "Totally fair thing to wonder. Quick fact that surprises most people: panels actually run a little more efficiently when it's cold, since they work off light, not heat — cloudy just means reduced output, not zero. And the number I'd show you is already built off this area's real annual sun hours, not a sunny-day guess."
- Homeowner: "Huh. I didn't know heat was actually bad for them."
- You: "Most people don't — it's the opposite of what you'd expect. Want me to walk your roof and show you what this specific house would actually produce, cloud cover and all?"
You didn't argue their climate is fine. You corrected the one fact that was wrong and routed the rest to an actual measurement.
